Umpires Defend Controversial Calls Against Mets, Yankees

The reversed call that marked the Mets’ 8-6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday brought an umpiring crew back into the New York spotlight. The umpires worked a Yankee game last week that featured a similar play.

On Monday, the Mets unraveled in the fifth inning after the umpires called a conference and ruled that Mike Pelfrey had hit the Reds’ Scott Rolen on the arm with a pitch that was initially ruled it a foul tip.

Last Friday, the crew worked the Yankees’ 6-1, 11-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays that included a similar scenario.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera hit Alex Gonzalez on the forearm in the ninth, but the plate umpire Mark Wegner called it a foul ball. While Toronto Manager Cito Gaston came out to argue, Wegner convened with two umpires to discuss the play, but they decided there was not enough evidence to overturn the initial call. Gonzalez struck out to end the inning.
